If your ‘Cruiser is like mine, then it’s eaten air pumps as often as I eat Thai food: Once a year. Gutting it is a possibility, but it’s worrisome to have a failed part running your water pump. On top of that, it’s possible that the pump will seize leaving you stranded.

Fortunately, the Mean Green alternator makes bypassing the air pump easy due to its dual pulley setup. One could also use a later Toyota dual pulley alternator, or even modify the existing alternator. I believe the 3FZ-E used a dual pulley alternator, but I’m not certain.

You’ll need a 17615 belt, and a 17495 belt. The person at the auto parts counter may not know what you’re asking about, so you could try a part number similar to 17A615. Regardless, they probably have it, but you may have to help them out. The first number is the width of the belt in 64ths of an inch, and the second is the length in inches x-1 (e.g., 495 = 49.5″).

    1. Run the 13x1255mm belt from the crank to the water pump to the alternator.
    1. Run the 13x1575mm from the crank to the P/S pump to the alternator.
  1. Once tightened, both belts should have equal tension. See Figure 1 for illustration.

The image on the right shows that the pump is no longer in use. I’m leaving it in as a back up, should anything go wrong with the dual-belt system.
